As a graduate of Western Michigan University, Maryalene earned her bachelor’s degree in political science. Her studies focused on comparative politics with a special emphasis on Russian and East European political systems and international business. After graduation, Maryalene spent 13 years in the Michigan House and Senate working as the Director of Constituent Relations for Patricia Birkholz, a West Michigan legislator. Currently, Maryalene is a member of her local city council and planning commission.
